Windom Woman Faces Fraud Charges

(Windom) A woman from Windom MN was scheduled to be arraigned in Clay County court on Tuesday (Jan 21st) on credit card fraud charges. Alexis Jewelle Smith age 39 of Windom was arrested in December 2024 following an investigation by the Clay County Sheirff’s office which found Smith had used her deceased grandmother’s credit card. Larae Smith passed away in August and according to the criminal complaint Smith obtained the credit card shortly after her grandmother’s death. Smith charged just under 1500 dollars to the card in August and then another 12 thousand in September. Clay County Attorney Travis Johnson formally charged smith with one count of credit card fraud over 10,000 dollars which is a class C Felony in Iowa. Class C felonies carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison plus fines and court fees. Smith posted a 10,000-dollar bail bond and was released soon after her arrest. Smith applied for and was granted a public defender to represent her.
