MCW School Board Hears Options to go from Three Buildings to Two

Thu 1-23-2025

(Sherburn) The Martin County West School Board met in regular session Wednesday and swore in their elected officers. Mark Wohlhuter, Jeff Scholl, Laura Borchardt and Darren Thate were all re-elected last November. Each member will serve a 4 year term. The board also elected their officers. Sarah Rohman will again be the board chair, Jeff Scholl is the vice chair, Borchardt will serve as the clerk and Wohlhuter the treasurer. Rohman will also serve as the Minnesota State High School League representative. The school formed a building consolidation study group, which consisted staff members from each building and all departments, as the school district needs to make cuts to stay within their budget. Options of moving to two buildings instead of 3 were presented at Wednesday's meeting. No action was taken at last night's meeting because they are in the infancy stages of planning and gathering ideas on how to best stay within their budget. If the board goes down to two buildings the most likely option will be the high school in Sherburn and the elementary school in Trimont. The board would NOT shut down the elementary school in Sherburn but would turn down the utilities and would put the building up for sale.

In other business the school board did accept the highest and best offer they received for the bus garage at the Welcome bus garage site. The Welcome school building is still for sale. The board's next meeting will be on February 11th at 5:30.
