Jim Nesseth on Timely Rains
(Lakefield, Mn.)-- Crop conditions across the region have been seeing a big improvement thanks to the timely rains recently. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield says the timing couldn't have been better with corn and soybeans now at a critical stage of development..
"Most of these fields now are getting close to being fully tasseled. They're getting some ears set and that's right during the silking that's started. And so, you know, we can probably just expect some really good pollination for the corn and then to compliment the timely rains is these cooler temperatures during pollination. That's just a real big plus. So we kind of turned a corner in terms of maybe getting some higher yield potential. I know a lot of our producers have forward contracted a lot of grain and were really concerned about meeting those obligations, and so now there's a since of relief they're at least going to get close to some of APH levels maybe in yield. Certainly we're going to need some more rain in August, no question about that. But things have changed and this crop has really improved."
Nesseth adds the region continues to run ahead of normal when it comes to growing degree days, another important factor in crop development.
