Incident On East Lake Okoboji Claims Life Of An Omaha Man
(Spirit Lake)-- An incident late Wednesday morning on East Lake Okoboji claimed the life of an Omaha man.
The Dickinson County Sheriff's Office says it received a 911 call shortly before 11:30 am from the 16000 block of 255th Avenue in the Francis Sites area on the west side of East Lake Okoboji. The caller reported a man was having trouble staying up and had gone underwater.
The Sheriff's Office says 41-year-old Brandon Urban of Omaha had swam out in the area of the lake where his son fell off a paddleboard and became entangled in weeds. Brandon Urban, who was not wearing a life jacket, freed his son and then became entangled himself. He was unable to stay above water and went under. Friends of Urban were able to locate him underwater and brought him to shore. Lifesaving measures were administered on the scene. Urban was taken to Lakes Regional Healthcare where the measures continued until he was pronounced dead.
Authorities say the incident remains under investigation.
The Lakes Regional Healthcare ambulance, Spirit Lake First Responders, Spirit Lake Fire Department, Arnolds Park-Okoboji Dive Team and fire boat and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources responded to the scene, along with the Sheriff's Office.
