Friends of Lakeside Lab Science Seminar to feature Dr. Brent Mortenson June 21
(Okoboji)-The Speaker Series continues at Lakeside Lab on Tuesday night. Reporter Becky Thoreson has details:
The Friends of Lakeside Lab’s Science Seminar Series will continue on Tuesday evening with a talk by Dr. Brent Mortenson who teaches the Ecology Class at the Lab in the summertime.
Mortenson says, he’ll be discussing his graduate research at ISU. “Most of my work down there was focused on the question of, how do species co-exist with one another. The prairies that we have around here, especially the old remnant ones that have been around for 10,000 years, in a ten acre area, you might have 100 or 150 species. It’s a whole lot different than looking at your front lawn, where you have, ideally, one species. Maybe if you’ve got a lot of weeds like mine, more than that. But, what allows them to coexist? A lot of my work looks at the things that are eating those plants. So, the herbivores and how do they allow these plant species, or help these plant species coexist with one another.”
Dr. Mortenson will speak at 7 pm Tuesday at Mahan Hall on the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory Campus. The talk is free and open to the public.
