(Undated)– What could be a significant winter storm is still expected to impact the region later tonight (Tues.) into Wednesday.

The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for Watonwan and Martin counties in Minnesota and Emmet, Palo Alto, Pocahontas and Kossuth counties. The blizzard warning also includes a large part of south central and southeastern Minnesota, as well as north central and northeast Iowa. A winter weather advisory has been posted for the rest of the region, including the Jackson, Lyon, Murray, Cottonwood and Nobles Counties.

Forecasters say blizzard to near blizzard conditions will likely develop late tonight (Tues.) continuing into early Wednesday. Rain is expected to break out over the region through the day today (Tues.), with temperatures falling through the afternoon. The rain will quickly change to snow this evening with snowfall continuing into early Wednesday. Locally, 1 to 3 inches can be expected in the Iowa Great Lakes, but amounts will quickly trend upward along and east of Highway 4, where 3 to 6 inches of snow could fall.

Forecasters say a very strong wind will also develop through the day today (Tues.) with gusts as high as 65 mph possible late tonight (Tues) into early Wednesday.

Authorities are urging people not to travel late tonight and early Wednesday in those areas under the blizzard warning.
