(Arnolds Park)-The Walleye Season Opener is this weekend in the Iowa Great Lakes. Reporter Becky Thoreson has details:
The 40th Walleye Weekend will be held May 7 and 8 in the Iowa Great Lakes.
Okoboji Chamber Director of Membership and Events Kiley Zankowski says, there’s big prize money on the line. “We’re really excited to have this anniversary year, the 40th year, which means that the prize went up to $40,000. So, if you catch one of those tagged walleye over May 7-8, and you’re registered for the tournament, $40,000 is yours.”
She notes that registration for both the weekend and the extended contest ends Friday night. “Registration for the weekend and the extended contest, both close at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, May 6th. So, even if you can’t come up for the weekend, there’s no requirement to register for the weekend in order to do the extended contest. You can pick one or the other, but we highly, highly encourage you to do both. If you do not register for that extended contest and you catch that fish, unfortunately we’re not able to give you that prize money. So, there’s thousands of dollars up for grabs for the first 3 tagged fish caught up until August 31st.”
