Sweet wins opening night of Great Lakes Shootout

JACKSON - Brad Sweet won the opening night of the Great Lakes Shootout Friday at Jackson Motorplex. Nearly 60 of the best winged sprint car drivers in the country are in town for the event.

Sweet, who started sixth, used a late-race move in traffic to lead the final eight laps of the $5,000-to-win, 25-lap main event featuring the Outlaw 410 winged sprint cars and IRA Outlaw Sprint Series.

Sheldon Haudenschild finished second with Donny Schatz third, Kasey Kahne fourth and Ian Madsen fifth.

Schatz and Daryn Pittman each set quick time in their qualifying groups

Heat winners were Schatz, Zeb Wise, Tony Knight, Lynton Jeffrey, Bill Balog and Mark Dobmeier.

Schatz and Madsen won dashes. Winning B Mains were Jason Sides and Cory Eliason.

The event is scheduled to conclude Saturday night. Sunday is a rain date.

No spectators are allowed in the grandstand or pits.
