Minnesota State Sweeps Basketball National Championships

Minnesota State University, Mankato captured the NCAA Division II National Championship in women’s and men’s basketball over the weekend. 

The MSU women's basketball team defeated Texas Woman's University for their first title since 2009 in St. Joseph, Missouri on Friday. It’s the second national title in program history and first under 13th year head coach Emily Thiesse. Mavericks sophomore Natalie Bremer led the offense and later received the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player award. Senior First Team All-American Joey Batt was also named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Minnesota State men's basketball team defeated Nova Southeastern University 88-85 for their first-ever National Championship in Evansville, Indiana on Saturday. 0

The title game came down to the closing seconds as Kyreese Willingham made a three-pointer from the corner with less than one second left. A turnover on the inbounds pass sealed the deal for the Mavericks. Malik Willingham was named Elite Eight Most Outstanding Player. Kyreese Willingham also qualified for the All-Tournament Team. 

MSU is just the third school ever in any division to win both the men's and women's NCAA championships in the same season. 

The Minnesota State Athletic Department will host a "Welcome Home Celebration" for the Minnesota State men's and women's basketball teams on Monday, April 1, in the Taylor Center on the campus of Minnesota State University. The event is free and open to the public featuring both teams. Doors open at 4:00 with the program beginning at 4:30 p.m. and fans will have the opportunity to get autographs from both teams.
