Mavericks Survive Nicollet Rally to Control Valley

The Martin County West softball team escaped Nicollet with a wild win on Thursday despite a valiant comeback attempt.
The Mavericks beat the Raiders 10-9 to stand alone on top of the Valley division of the Tomahawk/Valley Conference.
MCW took the 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Hannah Rosenberg scored on a Maddie Carlson sacrifice fly and Courtney Anderson batted in Emily Anderson.
The Mavericks scored three more in the third when Emily Anderson plated Hannah Rosenberg. Emily Anderson scored on a throw after a Bailey Larson single. Addy Wohlhuter plated Courtney Anderson with a single to make it 5-0 MCW.
Rowan Faber and Bailey Larson scored on errors in the fifth to make it 7-0 MCW. Nicollet scored twice in the bottom frame.
Emily Anderson scored again and Meia Schuett scored as well on another error in the sixth to make it 9-2 MCW.
Faber stole home in the top of the seventh to make it 10-2 MCW.
Nicollet scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh but Hannah Rosenberg’s throw to Emily Schettler cut down the tying run at the plate to hold off the Raiders.
Carlson got the win for MCW after allowing seven earned runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts and one walk. Wohlhuter came in for the final 1/3 of an inning with two earned runs allowed on two hits and a pair of walks.
The 13-2 Mavericks host Sleepy Eye on Tuesday and we will have that game on Xtreme.
