Jackson Motorplex waiting on approval for opener

Wed 5-6-2020

JACKSON - Pending approval from Governor Tim Walz, Jackson Motorplex is planning to open its season May 15-16 by hosting the Great Lakes Shootout.

A limited number of race teams will be allowed and pit entry will be limited to 10 people per car. There will be no spectators allowed in the grandstand or pits either night.

The track submitted a comprehensive plan to the governor’s office last week. Track officials are waiting on final approval, but say that they highly anticipate approval will be granted.

Friday's event would feature the 410 Outlaw sprint cars paying $5,000 to win along with the Racesaver Sprint Cars. Saturday night’s event will feature just the 410 Outlaw Sprint Cars paying $7,000 to win.

All CDC guidelines will be enforced and teams will be required to park a minimum of 15 feet apart and practice social distancing while in the pit area.

There's racing scheduled at two tracks in the region this weekend.

Knoxville Raceway is scheduled to host the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Friday. The event is by invitation only and all full-time World of Outlaws drivers are expected to attend.

No spectators will be allowed.

Among the drivers scheduled to compete in Knoxville Friday is Kyle Larson. He was fired three weeks ago by Chip Ganassi Racing for using a racial slur while competing in an iRacing event.

The slur was publicly heard on a gaming app and went viral. Most of Larson's sponsors bailed on him and Ganassi had to fire his star NASCAR driver.

The 27-year-old rose through NASCAR's ranks in its diversity program. He was suspended by NASCAR and ordered to complete a sensitivity training course.

Larson is scheduled to race at Jackson Motorplex with the All Star Circuit of Champions as Friday, July 31 has been designated as Kyle Larson Night at the track.

Park Jefferson Speedway has the Spring Nationals scheduled for Friday and Saturday. A limited number of fans will be allowed for that event.

Classes scheduled to run are IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Hobby Stocks, IMCA Sport Compacts and IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars.
