Tue 8-13-2019

ESTHERVILLE - Iowa Lakes Community College has named Mike Turnbull as its new head volleyball coach, pending board approval.

Turnbull has coached for more than 26 years, most recently at Hibbing Community College.

He has experience coaching a variety of sports including volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball and baseball.

Turnbull guided the Cardinals to six Minnesota College Athletic Conference state tournament appearances, two NJCAA Region 13B second-place finishes, one NJCAA Region 13B championship and one third-place finish in the national Division III tournament.

He has coached five all-Americans and nine academic All-Americans.

Turnbull is excited to be coaching again.

He retired from Hibbing Community College in the spring of 2017, but has since realized he’s not quite done coaching yet.

"I am very thankful that the Iowa Lakes administration offered me this position," he said. "I have been anxious to end my two-year retirement, and to get back into coaching again, full-time.

"I feel blessed to be able to do that at Iowa Lakes and to be a part of the Estherville community. I have only been here a few days, and I can’t say enough about how welcoming everyone at the college and in the community, have been."

Turnbull will also serve as a Success Center instructional assistant.

ILCC Athletic Director Troy Larson looks forward to Turnbull joining the school.

"Mike is an experienced volleyball coach. He will do a excellent job running our program. He will coach our players up, and recruit the right type of athletes to benefit not only Iowa Lakes, but for our volleyball program as well. I’m looking forward to seeing his future successes."

The Lakers open their season Friday, Aug. 23 in Rockford, Ill. for the McHenry Invitational.
