DUBUQUE - Hobie Hedquist won two overtime games in goal over the weekend and has won three in a row for the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the United States Hockey League.
On Sunday, Hedquist, who is from Heron Lake, was in net for 51:41 of Dubuque's 2-1 overtime win over the Chicago Steel.
Hedquist had taken the net to start the game but immediately noticed a problem with his skate blade and retreated to the locker room for repairs and didn't enter the game until 9:43 of the first period.
“You prepare to play, so sitting on the bench for the first 10 minutes because of an equipment malfunction is definitely hard,” Hedquist said. “But getting through that first period gave me a lot of confidence. And getting a goal and the lead was really nice.”
Hedquist stopped 23 shots in the game.
“The defensive effort was fantastic,” Hedquist told the Dubuque Telegraph Herald. “We had a lot of blocked shots and forced them to take a lot of bad angle shots, which was huge.”
The previous night, Hedquist had made 30 saves in 63:20 of playing time as the Fighting Saints beat the Des Moines Buccaneers 3-2.
He has lowered his goals against average to 4.31 and improved his save percentage to .837.
Dubuque is scheduled to play at Youngstown Friday and Saturday.
