Fairmont wins Class C state title
SPRINGFIELD – Fairmont won the state Class C amateur baseball title Monday with a 12-0 win in seven innings over St. Patrick 12-0.
Levi Becker had three hits, three runs batted in and scored two runs for the Martins. Jack Waletich and Derek Schoen each had two RBI. Tyler Tennyson had two hits.
Ross Ackerman, a draftee from Windom, got the win after throwing six shutout innings. He allowed three hits, did not walk a batter and struck out four.
Jackson High School graduate Bill Dunker pitched two and one-third innings for St. Patrick, allowing six hits and five earned runs while striking out two and walking one. Dunker has played in the state tournament 23 of the last 24 years, a stretch that started with three trips by the Jackson Bulls from 1997-99.
Fairmont's Luke Becker was the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. He was 11-for-20 (one double and one triple), walked twice, scored 10 runs, had four RBI and stole three bases.
Jack Waletich, Jon Traetow and Derek Shoen were also named to the all-tournament team for the Martins.
