Baker resigns as JCC wrestling coach

Tue 7-24-2018

ST. PAUL - Randy Baker has resigned as head wrestling coach at Jackson County Central High School. His resignation was approved at Monday night's regular meeting of the JCC School Board.

Baker has been a head coach in Jackson County since 1984 under five different names.

He started at Lakefield High School in 1984 and coached the Panthers for three seasons until 1987 when Lakefield paired and became the Heron Lake-Okabena-Lakefield Silver Bullets in 1987.

In 1994, HLOL paired with Jackson High School and wrestled under the Jaguars nickname, with Baker and Jim Hart serving as co-coaches.

After Lakefield opted out of the pairing and consolidated as a school district with Jackson in 1997, Baker was coach of Jackson County Central/Southwest Star Concept and later JCC.

Baker has coached seven state championship teams.

JCC won back-to-back Class AA state titles in 1999 and 2000.

The Huskies won the Class A state title in 2008 and then won four in a row from 2010-2013.

Those seven state team titles ties him for second most in state history in that category.

Jim Jackson won 14 state titles at Apple Valley.

Also winning seven titles have been Don Dravis, Staples; Jim Short, Simley; and his son Will Short, Simley; Bill Demaray, Apple Valley; Gregg Greeno, St. Michael-Albertville; and Gerry Gingles, Canby.

The exact number of dual-meet wins is elusive, but it's calculated that he went over 500 during the 2016-2017 season.

Baker has coached 39 individual state champions, seven with Heron Lake-Okabena-Lakefield and 32 with Jackson County Central.

He is second on the all-time list of individual state champions coached in state history, trailing only Jim Jackson, who has coached 60 state champions with Apple Valley and Shakopee since 1995.

Baker has coached 93 place winners, third on that list. He trails only Jackson (147) and Will Short of Simley (103).

Jackson County Central has had at least one state champion in 18 of its 21 years of existence. The Huskies have never gone two consecutive seasons without at least one state champion.
