Roman Voss and the Jackson County Central football team refused to lose Prep Bowl XLIII inside US Bank Stadium on Friday night.
The Huskies completed the unbeaten repeat by outlasting upset-minded Goodhue 20-15 for the Class AA state championship. Huskies head coach Tom Schuller says the team reached down deep to survive with the hard-fought win.
Voss put JCC on the board first by weaving his way to a 24-yard rushing touchdown that made it 6-0 Huskies.
The Wildcats later missed a field goal after the defense stiffened in JCC territory.
The Huskies lost starting center Carson Kolander late in the first quarter but he returned to play the entire second half despite an ankle injury.
Goodhue recovered three consecutive fumbles as JCC struggled to adjust. The Huskies forced a punt and turnover on downs on the first two drives but the Wildcats broke through with a TD run and extra point on the third to make it 7-6 Goodhue.
JCC responded to trailing for the first time since Prep Bowl XLII by marching down the field and taking the lead back with a 7-yard TD run by Voss. The Huskies led 12-7 at halftime.
Goodhue forced three fumbles and recovered two of them during the second half. JCC turned the Wildcats over on downs twice in the third quarter before the Wildcats returned the favor.
The JCC offense had six total fumbles and tied a Prep Bowl record by losing five of them. Jacob Kruger also threw a Hail Mary interception on the final play of the first half.
Goodhue converted a fourth-and-goal TD pass and added a trick play two-point conversion to take a 15-12 lead in the fourth quarter.
But the Huskies offense rallied again with a clutch drive that featured a diving 29-yard sideline catch by freshman Brody Anderson. Anderson led JCC with 38 yards receiving on a pair of receptions.
Voss punched in his third TD run from two yards away and added the two-pointer. The Huskies led 20-15 with just over four minutes left.
Gage Johnson’s pass deflection forced one more Goodhue turnover on downs late in the fourth. Voss converted a fourth down on the ensuing JCC drive to cement the title.
Voss amassed 252 rushing yards on 38 carries. His hat trick also added a new single-season mark of 30 rush TDs to his long list of JCC records. Voss went 7-of-12 passing for 80 yards on the night. He also had three tackles and broke up a pair of passes.
Gage Johnson collected 101 all-purpose yards with 69 rushing and 32 receiving for the Huskies.
Ben Gallagher returned from last year’s injury to help lead JCC’s gate-to-wire repeat. Gallagher collected 43 all-purpose yards to go with three tackles.
Weston Rowe helped lead the Huskies in the trenches as well.
Goodhue threw for 209 yards but the JCC defense held the Wildcats to just five yards on 22 rushing attempts.
Evan Bartholomaus had a team-high seven tackles and a pass breakup. Kade Freking-Leu had a pair of sacks and four QB hurries. Blayze Hillmer led JCC with 3.5 tackles for loss.
The 13-0 Huskies captured their 26th straight victory and clinched back-to-back undefeated titles. It’s the third state football championship in JCC history.
