Estherville Shopko to close

Thu 1-10-2019

(Estherville)-- Some more SHOPKO Hometown stores, including the one in Estherville, will be closing their doors for good.

It comes on reports the retail chain is expected to file for bankruptcy protection next week. A pharmaceutical company says it supplied SHOPKO with $67 million in drugs since November but hasn't been paid since December.

A time frame for the closure of the Estherville store hasn't been disclosed. The store had only been open a little more than a year. City officials announced in 2016 a package of incentives to entice SHOPKO to open a store in Estherville.

SHOPKO announced last month it was closing nearly 40 stores, including its Hometown Stores in Cherokee, Eldora and Webster City.

Hy-Vee recently announced it was purchasing some of SHOPKO's pharmacy locations.
