Six area wrestlers bring home medals
ST. PAUL - Six area wrestlers brought home medals from the state wrestling tournament, including two state championships.
Jackson County Central had two place winners including a champion in Class 1A, while Fairmont/Martin County West had four place winners with one champ in Class 2A.
Jackson County Central
Dalton Wagner won the 195-pound state title in his fourth trip to the state tournament.
In the semifinals Saturday, the second-ranked Wagner pinned fifth-ranked Jake Ubert of Fosston-Bagley in 3:11 and then won a 7-1 decision over top-ranked Jacob Bennett of Zumbrota-Mazeppa.
Wagner finished the season with a 13-0 record.
He competed in the state tournament at 106 pounds in 2014 and 126 in 2015 and placed second in the 2017 state tourney.
Jacob Tvinnereim was second at 152.
On Saturday, the top-ranked Tvinnereim won 3-1 over Blue Earth Area's Zach Buseman, who had been rated seventh at 160. In the finals, Tvinnereim lost 3-1 to second-ranked Adam Jaeger of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa.
Tvinnereim finishes the season 48-6.
He also placed sixth at 113 pounds in 2015, qualified at 132 in 2016 and was fourth at 138 last year.
Fairmont/Martin County West
Top-ranked Jaxson Rohman won the first-ever state title for the Red Bulls at 113.
Rohman started Saturday with an 11-4 win over second-ranked Jared Johnson of Kasson-Mantorville in the semifinals. It was his second win of the tournament over Johnson as he had also won in the team tournament on Thursday.
In the finals, Rohman won 10-3 over third-ranked Ashton Clark of Park Rapids Area.
Rohman finishes the season with a 51-2 record.
He's a three-time state qualifier and two-time finalist, placing sixth at 106 as a seventh-grader and second, also at 106 as an eighth-grader.
Fairmont/MCW also had three sixth-place finishers, Jordan Wolter (41-11) at 132, Miles Fitzgerald (43-11) at 145 and Collin Steuber (50-6) at 182.
