Martins, Buttermakers grab state berths
MILROY - Fairmont and Hadley grabbed the first two spots out of Region 13C for the state amateur baseball tournament over the weekend. The Martins were seeded fourth and the Buttermakers sixth for the eight-team region playoffs
On Sunday, the Martins beat the Milroy Irish 4-2 in the third and deciding game of that best-of-three series at The Irish Yard.
The two starting pitchers were Windom draftees, and also brothers as Kobe Lovell started for Fairmont and Collin Lovell for Milroy.
Kobe Lovell allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits, did not walk a batter, hit one and struck out three in five and two-third innings to get the win for the Martins. Collin Lovell allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits, walked two and fanned seven in seven and one-third innings and took the loss for the Irish.
Jon Traetow had four hits for Fairmont.
On Saturday, Hadley downed Luverne 10-5 as the Buttermakers won that series in two straight.
Fairmont plays Hadley in the the region championship series starting Wednesday in Fairmont. Milroy and Luverne meet in the third-place series starting Wednesday in Milroy.
The state tournament sites are Delano, Maple Lake and Dassel.
