Lakers in contention after first round
AMES - Iowa Lakes Community College is four strokes out of the final qualification spot after the day of the Region XI men's golf tournament at Veenker Memorial Golf Course.
The Lakers had a 322 total for sixth place, four shots behind both Northeast and Southwestern for a berth in the national tournament. Kirkwood is first with 304.
Trace Jacbson was low for Iowa Lakes as he's tied for 10th place with a 78.
Cameron Maxwell carded an 80, Carlton Rahn 81 and Morgan Edwards 83.
"Today was all about getting through round one and being in contention for round two," said ILCC coach Jarvis Weber. "You can never win a two-day event on day one, but you can certainly lose it. The boys did not bring their best game, but they did just enough to make Monday's round meaningful, and that means something. We all knew that this was going to be a very competitive tournament and I don't think anybody is surprised by the team standings. It's going to be a great environment and truly an exciting finale to the season."
The top three teams and next two individuals qualify for the national tournament later this month in Plymouth, Ind.
