ILCC men to host Southwestern
ESTHERVILLE - Second-seeded Iowa Lakes Community College will host third-seeded and defending national champion Southwestern in the semifinals of the Region XI men's basketball tournament at 7 p.m. Thursday at Laker Gymnasium.
In the opening round Tuesday, the Lakers defeated NIACC 81-80 and the Spartans were 92-51 winners over Des Moines.
NJCAA No. 19 ILCC has a 23-8 record, while No. 15 Southwestern is 24-7.
The teams split during the regular season, with each team winning at home. The Spartans won 91-81 in Creston, while the Lakers 94-86 in Estherville.
"Southwestern is a good team and they are well coached," said Iowa Lakes coach Troy Larson. "We have to out rebound Southwestern. When we out rebound the opposing team good things usually happen for us."
The other semifinal Thursday has fifth-seeded Iowa Central (20-11) at top-seeded Kirkwood (24-5).
The winners meet for the region title Saturday at the site of the higher-seeded team.
