Huskies top Mavericks in 3AA boys opener

JACKSON – Third-seeded Jackson County Central defeated sixth-seeded Martin County West 77-64 in the opening round of the Section 3AA South Sub-Section boys basketball tournament Saturday. It's the fifth straight year the Huskies and Mavericks have met in the opening round.

JCC made 27 field goals in the game, 14 two-pointers and 13 threes.

Rudy Voss scored 23 points to lead the Huskies in scoring, making five three-pointers.

Noah Carr scored 16 points, Bradley Buhl 10 and Dylan Svoboda nine.

Cole Owens and Wyatt Geistfeld netted 17 points apiece for the Mavericks, with Cam Dressen scoring 13 and Matt Holm nine.

JCC plays second-seeded Pipestone in the sub-section semifinals at 7 p.m. Thursday at Windom. The Arrows beat seventh-seeded St. James Area 69-45 in the first round.

On the other side of the bracket, top-seeded Fairmont beat eighth-seeded Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 55-39 and fourth-seeded Windom downed fifth-seeded Luverne 73-61. The Cardinals and Eagles will play at 7 p.m. Thursday in Jackson.
