A few final state wrestling tourney notes

By LEE LARSON
Sports Director

Tuesday, March 9

A few notes after an exciting four days at Xcel Energy Center.

Cooper Moore's 160-pound at the state Class 1A tournament made him the 18th wrestler from Jackson County to win a state title for a total of 28 state titles.

Earlier, Bronson Steuber won the 125-pound title, his second championship. He's the eighth wrestler from the county to win multiple titles.

Chad Kraft and Nate Baker were three-time state champions.

Steuber joins Tim Jansma, Marc Harwood, Cole Von Ohlen, Torey Stewart and Travis Rutt as two-time state champions

Moore puts his name on a list of one-time state champs, joining Scott Vancura, Chad Gage, Nate Hanson, Bryce Vancura, Dusty Wilking, Steve Majerus, Tom Nesseth, Jared Knips and Caleb Lines.

Randy Baker has coached each of those wrestlers in a career that started in Lakefield in 1985.

His 28 state champions is the most in state history for a coach not from Apple Valley. Jim Jackson of Apple Valley had seven wrestlers win state titles last Saturday for a total of 49.

JCC's six place winners gives Baker a total of 67, tying Jim Short of Simley for fifth on the all-time list. Valley had nine, giving Jim Jackson 109.

Boys basketball correction

While the wrestlers were winning a state title Saturday night in Saint Paul, the JCC boys basketball team was making a little history of its own in Jackson when the Huskies beat Fairmont in the opening round of the Section 3AA South Sub-Section tournament.

It was originally reported that it was the first win postseason win ever for Jackson County Central.

But we did get a call Tuesday pointing out that the 2000 Huskies picked up a first-round section tournament game over Tracy-Milroy by a 63-59 margin.

That team would lose in the next round to BDRSH to finish with a 14-8 record. That 14 wins is the most for a JCC team.

Members of that team were Brad Bosacker, John Fretham, Derek Frodermann, Ben Hansen, Travis Harmening, John Hohenstein, Jason Larsen, Ryan Ollerich, Chris Perkins, Mitch Rowe, Matt Schultz, Brad Vrchota, Scott Williams, Ricky Ybarra and Jack Zelinko. Mark Kocak was the head coach, with Tom Schuller serving as assistant.

If you have something you'd like to read about in this space or hear on the air on KKOJ-KRAQ, be sure to drop a note.
